What are Hall Effect Sensors used for in a BRUSHLESS DC MOTOR?

How do they operate and help in the rotation?

The hall effect sensors detect the position of the rotor and control the transistors that switch the direction of the current in the stator windings or transfer the current to the a different stator winding. The combination of the sensor and transistors performs the function performed by the commutator and brushes in a brush and commutator type DC motor. The switching of the current keeps the stator magnetic field in the proper position to exert a turning force on the permanent magnets in the rotor as the rotor turns.
